In the second half of April, a series of geomagnetic disturbances awaits the inhabitants of the Earth. According to forecasts of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI and the ISSF, several magnetic storms of varying intensity may occur between April 14 and 20. The increase in solar activity will gradually increase, reaching its peak by the middle of the week. This will provoke fluctuations in the magnetosphere of our planet, which will be felt by weather-dependent people. In the period from April 14 to April 20, many may feel a deterioration in their well-being and the appearance of headaches. For more information about when magnetic storms are expected this week, see the Izvestia article.

Schedule of magnetic storms from April 14th to 20th

According to the forecast of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the IKI RAS, the first half of the week will be relatively calm: on April 14 and 15, the geomagnetic field will remain stable, without foreshadowing significant disturbances. However, on April 16, experts predict a noticeable increase in solar activity, which will lead to a G2—level magnetic storm, which is the average level on the international storm intensity scale, where G1 is a weak storm and G5 is an extreme one. The geomagnetic disturbance will begin in the afternoon and last until nightfall.

By April 17th, activity will gradually subside, and by the 18th, the magnetic field will return to a calm state. Stable conditions are forecast for the weekend, April 19 and 20, without geomagnetic storms.

Magnetic Storm Calendar for April 2025

In general, the second half of April promises to be intense in terms of space weather. Geophysicists expect that the main peak of geomagnetic instability will occur in the first and third decades of the month. From April 5 to April 10, there was a series of moderate G1—G2 level storms caused by several solar flares. From April 11 to April 14, the Earth was in a zone of relative rest, but on April 16, a new release of solar plasma is expected, which will cause the storm.

Subsequent disturbances may occur towards the end of the month, between April 21 and April 25. In Moscow and other major cities, magnetic storms can be felt more strongly due to the large number of electronic devices. According to scientists, as the solar cycle grows, the number and intensity of magnetic storms will only increase in the future.

The effect of magnetic storms on humans

Magnetic storms occur due to the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetic field. When charged particles ejected from the surface of the Sun reach our planet, they provoke fluctuations in the geomagnetic field, which can last from several hours to several days. Such changes are especially sensitive for people with chronic diseases, vegetative-vascular dystonia, hypertension, as well as the elderly and weather-dependent.

During magnetic storms, many people may experience a deterioration in their well-being: headaches, insomnia, irritability, decreased concentration, palpitations, and high blood pressure. In addition, a geostorm can affect the psycho-emotional state, causing anxiety or apathy.

To mitigate the effects of geomagnetic storms on the body, doctors recommend following a sleep and rest regime, avoiding overwork, avoiding heavy food and alcohol, and minimizing stressful situations. During this period, walking in the fresh air, moderate physical activity and breathing exercises will be useful. People with cardiovascular diseases should always have the necessary medications with them and consult a doctor at the first sign of malaise. It is also important to keep up-to-date space weather forecasts in order to prepare in advance for a potential deterioration in well-being.

The influence of magnetic storms affects not only health, but also technology. On such days, there are failures in the operation of satellite communications, navigation systems, as well as increased error in radio signals. Energy companies and communications services traditionally receive special notifications about potential storms in order to adjust the operation of equipment and minimize the consequences.
