The National Electoral Council of Ecuador has named the current head of state, Daniel Noboa, as the winner of the second round of the presidential election after processing more than 90% of the ballots. The corresponding decision was announced on April 13 by the head of the Ecuadorian election commission, Diana Atamaint.

"We inform the people of Ecuador that after processing more than 90% of the ballots, there has been an irreversible trend in the results of the second round of presidential elections. The NIS recognizes the candidates [for president and vice-president] from the National Democratic Action Party, Daniel Noboa and Maria Jose Pinto, as winners," she said during a press conference.

According to data published by the Ecuadorian department, 55.88% of people voted for Noboa, while 44.12% of voters supported his rival, presidential candidate from the Civil Revolution party, Luis Gonzalez.

Following the results, Gonzalez spoke to her supporters, saying that she would not admit defeat in the presidential election and intended to demand a recount of votes.

"In the name of the men, women, children and young people we represent, in the name of the people we represent, we do not recognize the results presented by the National Electoral Council," the Artistegui portal quotes her as saying.

Gonzalez called the election results "the most terrible and gross fraud in the history of the country." Now she intends to demand a recount of votes and the opening of ballot boxes.

Meanwhile, Russian Ambassador to Quito Vladimir Sprinchan said that Russia plans to build bilateral relations with Ecuador under the elected government, while, in his opinion, there are great prospects for cooperation.

"As for Russia's attitude towards the candidate who won, we will continue to work with the new government of Ecuador in the interests of developing relations with our country. The prospects are great, and there are practical proposals on our part," he told RIA Novosti.

Sprinchan also noted that the staff of the Russian Embassy, who attended the elections as observers, did not notice any violations in the process.

In February, it became known that Noboa was in the lead in the first round of the presidential election in Ecuador, but did not gain enough votes to win. Then 47.02% voted for him, 41.14% voted for his main competitor Luisa Gonzalez. As the uncertainty continued, it was decided to hold a second round of elections.
