In 2025, there was a surge in sales of hard hat policies, Izvestia found out. Some market players have recorded a twofold increase in registrations, despite the decline in sales of new cars, which traditionally require additional protection. The trend, according to the industry, is associated with a shortage of spare parts and difficulties with repairs — people do not want to repair cars on their own. At the same time, the average price of policies has fallen, despite general inflation, due to the development of mini-casco. However, there is not much point in the latter: their coverage is often too limited. About how drivers can protect themselves on the road and what repair problems motorists are now most often faced with — in the material of Izvestia.

Why Russians are buying hard hats more often

Sales of hard hat policies in the first three months of this year doubled compared to the same period in 2024, according to data from the financial marketplace "Compare".

The trend towards higher sales of hard hats at the beginning of the year was confirmed to Izvestia by the largest insurers. Thus, Sogaz noted an increase of more than 20%. In Absolut Insurance, the indicator increased by 15%, in Rosgosstrakh — by 13%, in Sberbank Insurance — by 11%, and in Renaissance Insurance — by 10% (for individuals). In the last company alone, more than 150,000 policies were sold in the first quarter of 2025. Among the small market players, the growth in demand for hard hats was even greater, explained in "Compare".

At the same time, according to Autostat, in February 2025, the number of cars sold showed a drop of 25%, and in March - by 46% compared to the same months of 2024, said Artem Yakovlev, director of the Ingosstrakh casco domain. In the segment of used cars, there was also a decrease — by 5-7%, that is, policies are increasingly being issued for supported cars.

In such conditions, the demand for hard hats is driven by rising prices for cars, their repairs and components, the press service of Sogaz explained. Customers are afraid that repairs in the event of an accident will be too expensive, and it will be difficult to get spare parts on their own, agreed Sergey Demidov, vice president of Renaissance Insurance. Compared to 2022, the price situation is more stable, but after the price increase, people began to perceive cars as high-value property.

Is it worth buying a mini helmet

At the same time, the average price of a hard hat in early 2025 fell by 10%, according to Compare. This is due to the popularity of mini-hard hat policies with limited coverage. The average cost of such insurance was only 1.5 thousand rubles. At the same time, the most expensive policy with full-fledged protection cost 375.8 thousand rubles.

People have become more likely to insure supported cars, confirmed Alexander Bakaev, head of the Insurance Development and Economic Analysis Directorate at IC MAKS. For such machines, customers mostly buy policies with a franchise or with less coverage, Sogaz added. Insurance with a limited set of risks accounts for up to a third of sales. Products that compensate for damage sustained only as a result of accidents with a culprit without CTP are in particular demand.

In Ingosstrakh, the number of hard hats with reduced coverage has already reached half of the contracts concluded, said Artem Yakovlev. At the same time, in 90% of cases, people prefer to continue to apply for a full-fledged insurance policy for new cars, Sogaz clarified.

However, such policies often offer too limited a set of risks, which leads to deceived expectations, Izvestia wrote earlier. The vast majority of them do not include, for example, the most common type of compensation — accidents caused by the driver. Due to such products, you can save on the price of a hard hat, but lose a lot in case of an accident, as you will eventually have to repair at your own expense. Often, market players use such a product not at all in the interests of the client, but to manipulate losses.

Irina Frank, CEO of Frank Auto, believes that another reason for the growing demand for hard hats is the tightening of requirements by banks for borrowers. Even when buying a used car, many credit organizations insist on taking out insurance as a condition for issuing a loan. In addition, after the wave of hijackings, the demand for insurance against damage and theft has increased even among owners of cars older than five years. At the beginning of 2025, insurers noted an increase in the number of hijackings to 70%, Izvestia wrote earlier.

Is it difficult to repair a car without insurance in 2025

However, the main reason for the growing demand for hard hats is that more and more car owners realize that car repairs without insurance will be very labor-intensive. And the policy allows you to avoid difficulties and reduce costs in the event of an accident, said Maxim Sorokin, head of vehicle underwriting and analytics at Absolut Insurance.

Repairs after an accident are 30-40% more expensive today than they were two years ago, said Irina Frank from Frank Auto. In addition, there are still problems with the supply of spare parts for cars imported through parallel imports, as well as for cars whose manufacturers have left the Russian Federation, experts from the insurance company "Consent" said. They explained that the delivery time may exceed three months due to complex logistics.

In the case of Chinese brands that are officially supplied to the Russian market, problems mainly arise with new models: body parts for them appear with a delay of at least three months, the Consent added. And if there are no spare parts in warehouses in the Russian Federation, the delivery time from China can range from one and a half to four months.

There are no problems with large Chinese brands that are officially represented on our market, such as Haval, Geely, Chery, GAC, Changan, the press service of Sberbank Insurance added.

Currently, 99% of CASCO payments are in the form of repairs, Sovcombank Insurance said. This is a priority form of compensation, agreed Dmitry Kuznetsov, supervisor of the CASCO department at Rosgosstrakh. But there are hijackings and situations where the car has been seriously damaged. In these cases, the payment is made in cash, he added.

Can the prices of hard hats rise?

In 2025, the preservation of the state program for preferential car loans may support the demand for hard hats, according to the All-Russian Union of Insurers (VSS). Sales in the secondary market and the development of a product line with a limited set of risks will have a positive impact.

A high key rate will be a deterrent. It is now at a record high of 21%. At the same time, with a decrease in car loans, pent-up demand will begin to accumulate. It will lead to a surge in sales after monetary policy easing, the BCC noted.

— The growth in demand for hard hats is likely to continue, especially in the segment of used cars. The key factor is the lack of signs of stabilization in the spare parts market. Even if sales of new cars recover, the fleet of cars older than seven years in Russia already exceeds 40 million, and their owners have to insure themselves," said Irina Frank from Frank Auto.

Currently, the average price for a full-coverage hard hat ranges from 30,000 to 70,000 rubles, depending on the type of car, region and other characteristics, said Maxim Kolyadov, head of work with individuals at Insurance Broker AMsec24.

However, if policy sales continue to grow, insurers may raise the cost by 10-20% to balance supply and demand, the expert believes. He explained: the fact is that with sales growth, insurance payments may also increase, which increases financial risks for companies.
