- The Interior Ministry warned about a vulnerability in the Windows version of WhatsApp
A vulnerability has been discovered in the Windows version of WhatsApp (owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation), which allows fraudsters to send special attachments disguising them as secure files. This was announced on April 13 by the press service of the Department for the Organization of combating the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
"An attacker can send a VPO as a secure document or image. When opening such a file inside WhatsApp, the malware can start unnoticeably. The vulnerability has been fixed in update 2.2450.6," the agency noted in the Telegram channel.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation clarified that in order to avoid problems, WhatsApp needs to be updated to the latest version, and also not to open any attachments from strangers.
On April 12, the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported that attackers were using a scheme to recommend that the victim, under various pretexts, install an application on the device that distributes malicious software aimed at stealing personal data.
