Scientists discovered a floating lake on Kamchatka's Shiveluch volcano during field work. This was announced on April 13 by the press service of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVIS). Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"During field work on the extrusive domes of the Shiveluch volcano on April 10, 2025, members of the route group discovered an oval—shaped floating lake with a diameter of about 70 m from north to south and 50 m from west to east in the northern part of the studied structure," the institute's Telegram channel says.

It is specified that the water temperature at the sides of the lake reaches 52 degrees. There is a bubbling cauldron in the center of the reservoir. Its diameter is up to 3 m, the height of the emissions is about 40 cm.

A blue film can be seen on the surface of the lake. Scientists have suggested that it could arise from sulfur and its derivatives. According to the staff of the institution, they have already taken a sample of the lake's water and blue film for laboratory tests.

On April 12, employees of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution IVIS Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported the beginning of the eruption of the Nameless volcano, which is located in Kamchatka. The ash rose to a height of 4 km above sea level, its plume spread to a distance of 90 km northeast of the volcano.
