Germany needs to have several energy suppliers. This was announced on April 12 by the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) Friedrich Merz.

"We need gas, including American gas. <...> We should always have several suppliers and not depend on one," he said in an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper.

According to him, Germany will continue to be an importer of primary energy. Merz added that Germany plans to build gas-fired power plants that will be equipped with carbon capture and storage technology.

Earlier, on April 5, the Prime Minister of the German federal state of Thuringia, a member of the CDU party, allowed the possibility of resuming Russian gas supplies to Germany. However, according to him, it will be possible to do this only after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
