On April 12, German athlete Lukas Mertens set a new world record in 400 m freestyle swimming.

Mertens set a record at the Stockholm Open with a time of 3 min. 39.96 sec. As a result, the 23-year-old athlete managed to break the record of his compatriot Paul Biderman, which he achieved during the World Championships in Rome in 2009. His result was 3 min. 40.07 sec.

Mertens is the Olympic champion of 2024 and the European champion (2022). He also won a silver and two bronze medals at the World Championships, Sport-Express reminds.

Earlier, on April 6, Russian forward of the Washington Capitals hockey club Alexander Ovechkin scored the 895th goal in the regular season of the National Hockey League (NHL) in a match against the New York Islanders. Thus, he broke the sniper record of four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals.
