A gala evening in honor of Alexander Ovechkin's historical record for the number of goals scored in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season championships was held at the Capital One Arena in Washington. This was announced on April 12 by Izvestia correspondent Nikolai Masters.

"Hundreds of fans are on the ice of Capital One Arena right now, but not to play, but to congratulate. Alexander Ovechkin is in the very center. He has long been a legend for Washington," the correspondent reports.

In the footage of Izvestia, you can see the hall decorated in the club colors of the Washington Capitals and the joyful fans who gathered to pay their respects to the athlete.

Ovechkin handed out memorable gifts from the arena stage. One of the lucky ones was the correspondent of the Masters, who managed to catch a T-shirt with the autograph of the record holder.

One of Ovechkin's fans, Daniel, who came to the Capital One Arena, explained her admiration for the hockey player with his "sincerity." The girl recalled that the Russian athlete is fighting cancer in children by donating money for research.

Earlier, the organizers of the evening moved the event from Union Station to Capital One Arena. The decision to change the location was made so that as many people as possible could get to the event.

Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the NHL regular season on April 6 in a match against the New York Islanders, breaking Gretzky's record of 894 goals scored.

The Russian hockey player was congratulated on the record by the TV channels of the National Media Group and Sergey Zhukov. The performer dedicated a clip to the hockey player's favorite song from the repertoire of the musical group with a modified text in honor of the record goal to the historical achievement.
