US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, told the American leader that recognizing the new regions as part of the Russian Federation would be the fastest way to a ceasefire in Ukraine. This was reported on April 11 by the Reuters news agency, citing two American officials and five sources familiar with the situation.

It is clarified that Witkoff's conversation with Trump took place two days after the special envoy's meeting with Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), last week.

"The fastest way to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine," Witkoff told [Trump], "is to support a strategy that recognizes Russia's sovereignty over the four regions [that joined Russia in 2022]," the agency quoted Witkoff as saying.

According to Reuters, the meeting between the special envoy and Trump eventually ended without any decisions on changing the American strategy towards Russia.

On the morning of April 11, Witkoff arrived in Russia, where he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.

As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted before the event, the meeting between Putin and Witkoff is a good opportunity to convey to Trump the position of the Russian side. According to Peskov, aspects of the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine are being discussed at the meeting, while it will last "as long as necessary."

White House press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, in turn, said that the visit of the special envoy to Russia would be another step towards a truce in Ukraine.
