The White House called Witkoff's visit to Russia a step towards a truce in Ukraine.

The visit of US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steven Witkoff is another step towards a truce in Ukraine. This was announced on April 11 at a briefing by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.
"This is another step in the negotiation process for a ceasefire and the conclusion of a final peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine," she said.
At the same time, Leavitt stressed that the US president wants the military operations in Ukraine to end and is resolutely focused on a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.
Witkoff arrived in Russia on the morning of the same day, he is holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
As Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted before the event, the meeting between Putin and Witkoff is a good opportunity to convey to Trump the position of the Russian side. According to Peskov, aspects of the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine are being discussed at the meeting, while it will last "as long as necessary."
