Scammers use a malicious application allegedly to increase Internet speed in order to gain access to confidential data of potential victims. This was announced on April 11 by the press service of the Department for the Organization of Combating the Illegal Use of Information and Communication Technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

"The scheme continues to be used when fraudsters call citizens on behalf of cellular operators or providers, ask about the quality of communication and offer to speed it up for free," the Telegram channel of the Interior Ministry department says.

The department clarified that the attackers are asking Russians to install malicious software according to the instructions, which will subsequently gain access to payment means. Fraudsters may also require the victim to turn on the demo screen and read the codes from it in real time. According to the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, the attackers have already used such a scheme, deceiving a resident of Nizhny Novgorod.

On April 9, the press service of the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia warned that fraudsters had begun to extort money under the pretext of paying customs duties. It was clarified that such a scheme is common on marketplaces or when trading through numerous Telegram channels.
