In Nigeria, 33 of the 36 states are highly likely to be flooded in 2025. This was reported on April 10 by the Daily Post Nigeria newspaper, citing a statement by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utseva.

Information about the threat of a natural disaster was also confirmed by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). According to his data, 1,249 settlements in 33 states, as well as the federal Capital Territory (FCT), are at high risk of flooding.

Another 2,187 settlements in 31 states and the FCT are at moderate risk of flooding, the publication says.

Heavy rain and urban flooding is expected in major cities such as Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt, mainly due to poor drainage systems. Coastal states may also face flooding caused by rising sea levels.

Last August, Nigeria was hit by severe flooding, which killed at least 170 people. One of the country's oldest mosques, built almost 200 years ago, also collapsed due to heavy rains. In addition, after a natural disaster, crocodiles and snakes escaped from a zoo in the north of the country, which subsequently ended up in communities.
