The policy of the administration of US President Donald Trump, aimed at strengthening import controls, will lead the country to isolation. The corresponding opinion was expressed on Wednesday, April 9, by former US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

He explained his position by saying that at a time when the United States dealt only with China, they accounted for only 20% of global GDP. At the same time, the former Secretary of State noted, when the United States worked together with partners in Europe and East Asia, this figure was 50-60%.

"It's much harder for China to ignore this. This is how real results are achieved. I'm afraid that we are moving towards a situation where instead of "America first," we will get "America alone," he said in an interview with CNBC.

Blinken also expressed concern that the White House's measures could undermine confidence in the United States and lead to other countries looking for ways to bypass Washington.

On April 2, Trump announced large-scale trade measures: base tariffs of 10% are being introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For the EU, this figure has been raised to 20%, and for China — to 34%. CNBC later reported that the American leader increased duties on goods from China to 145%.

The New York Times reported on April 8 that Trump postponed the imposition of duties on 75 countries for 90 days due to panic among Americans - the president described the situation on the markets after the introduction of tariffs as "quite gloomy."
