Phishing has become the most popular way to steal funds from users' bank cards. In addition, social engineering and NFC card clones are also at the top. This was announced on April 11 by VTB.

Thus, customers are increasingly encountering fake online stores that offer products at a bargain price. On the fake website, the client is asked to enter his personal information — login, password, card number, and more. Fraudsters accompany the transaction with formal details — they send fake order numbers, offer agreements and other supporting documents. After the payment, the scammers stop contacting, and the site is deleted.

The organization also told about the theft of money by social engineering.

"Fraudsters pose as employees of a bank or security service to convince people to provide access to a card and personal data. They use various tactics, for example, they ask for a text message code, report suspicious activity and ask for confirmation of data, send fake notifications about card blocking, and so on," the bank said in a statement.

In addition, the attackers use NFC card clones. This is the most common scheme for making virtual card clones using spyware (software) that allows remote control of a smartphone, including a camera, microphone, and NFC functions. It is clarified that after installing the software, fraudsters are persuaded to confirm the data. For example, you can take a picture of the card or hold it up to your smartphone, enter the old PIN code and supposedly change it to a new one. At this time, NFC is activated and card data, including ID and expiration date, is intercepted. The information obtained is linked to the attackers' device, which allows them to withdraw money from ATMs and make contactless payments in stores.

"Scammers are constantly improving their schemes, and technology is only expanding their capabilities. Attacks can be directed against Russians of any gender, age, social status and place of residence. But middle-aged people are more often attracted to scammers because they are financially stable. Today, almost every second owner of bank cards may face an attempt at financial fraud. Financial security begins with your vigilance," said Dmitry Revyakin, Head of the Corporate Interests Protection Department at VTB's Security Department.

VTB noted that insurance of bank cards against fraudsters has become one of the ways to protect your money. VTB launched such a product in 2021, and last year customers issued about 800,000 insurance claims, which is almost one and a half times more than in 2023.

The insurance covers the most common risks that fraudsters use: the risks of hacking an online bank using malware, stealing card data, telephone fraud, using forged documents, and stealing cash.

Also, within the framework of certain tariffs, the policy can protect customer accounts and cards in any Russian banks.

"Scammers don't think to stop, regularly improving deception scenarios and causing more and more damage. We notice that the demand for card and account insurance against fraud is increasing — the policy may become another way to provide an additional level of security. At the same time, we provide card insurance to retired customers for free," said Dmitry Pugashkin, Head of the Insurance Department and Vice President of VTB.

According to the results of the research of the service "Work.<url>", which was reviewed by Izvestia on April 2, every fifth Russian polled (21%) faced deception in the digital space, and 13% of respondents became victims of scams in real life, offline. Half of the respondents (50%) fell for the tricks of intruders both on and off the Internet. At the same time, 16% of the survey participants have never experienced fraud either online or offline.
