Alexander Ovechkin, a Russian forward for the Washington Capitals hockey club, called the goal that allowed him to set a record for the number of goals scored in the National Hockey League (NHL) regular season the most important moment in his life, emphasizing its importance not only for hockey, but also for himself, the team, fans and family. He announced this on April 10 on the Good Morning America show, posted on Youtube.

"Yes, no one thought that the record would fall, but this is an incredible moment for hockey and for me. So thank you all very much," he said.

In addition, Ovechkin once again spoke about his relationship with Wayne Gretzky, the author of the previous record.

"You know, he's great. He was the best player in the history of hockey, and to receive support from him is tremendous. It is a great honor for me to know him, to have lunch with him and, of course, to break his record. He was there when I did it. His family was there. This is the most important moment in my life, of course. I still can't believe this is happening, but yes, it's an incredible feeling," said the hockey player.

Ovechkin also spoke about the charity event GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer ("The Great Pursuit of victory over cancer"). Within its framework, anyone can donate $8 to fight cancer, and Ovechkin said he would send money to a special fund for every goal he scored for the rest of his career.

"We decided to create The V Foundation and raise as much money as possible to help children, give them a smile, and energize them. I hope that we will do this more and more often," he said.

Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the NHL regular season on April 6 in a match against the New York Islanders, breaking Gretzky's record of 894 goals scored.

The Russian hockey player was congratulated on the record by the TV channels of the National Media Group and Sergey Zhukov. The performer dedicated a clip to the hockey player's favorite song from the repertoire of the musical group with a modified text in honor of the record goal to the historical achievement.
