The countries of the European Union (EU) and NATO, in the format of a "coalition of the willing," are studying the need to send troops to Ukraine for a "monitoring mission." This was announced on April 10 by the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, arriving at an informal meeting of the defense ministers of the Coalition of Willing countries at the NATO headquarters.

She noted that the discussion on this issue continues and a number of countries are ready to participate in a military mission, while others refuse.

"It could potentially be just a monitoring mission. I mean [there is] a discussion going on about whether it will be a monitoring mission, a deterrence mission, a peacekeeping mission, a reinforcement mission or a defense mission, there are different options," she said.

She also replied that the EU would discuss the issue of transferring the training of the Ukrainian military to the territory of Ukraine itself. According to her, the countries of the community have trained more than 73,000 Ukrainian soldiers in their territories as part of the military mission.

The meeting of the defense ministers of the countries of the "coalition of the willing" was convened on the initiative of Great Britain and France without the participation of the United States.

On April 10, the Politico newspaper reported that Ukraine had submitted a wish list to Western countries for the deployment of peacekeepers in the territories controlled by Kiev. The media noted that Kiev is holding consultations with the West to specify its wishes regarding a possible "peacekeeping mission."

Prior to that, on April 5, the heads of the general staffs of France, Great Britain and Ukraine discussed the possible deployment of peacekeepers to the territories controlled by Kiev. It was clarified that the countries had considered the structure, size and composition of the estimated contingent.

At the same time, former Assistant Deputy Secretary of Defense Stephen Brian said on March 31 that the deployment of the European military would require a lot of resources that Europe does not have. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow is categorically against the deployment of so-called Western peacekeepers on Ukrainian territories, as this is fraught with the danger of a direct clash between Russia and NATO.
