Cargo unmanned vehicles will be mass-produced at KAMAZ in 2028. This was announced by Sergey Kogogin, CEO of the Naberezhnye Chelny auto giant, after the launch of autonomous trucks on the Central Ring Road, which took place the day before.

KAMAZ provided three unmanned vehicles for movement in the Moscow region — two MAYAK-1 trucks and a second-generation MAYAK-2 car. All of them are based on the KAMAZ-54901 mainline tractor.

"In the project that is being implemented on the M-11 and on the Central Ring Road, we are gradually moving from the stage of pilot designs to the stage of pre—industrial implementation - cars on the M-11 and Central Ring Road can already be called pre-production models. These are machines close to those that will go into mass production by 2028. Now we are already testing the second—generation machines, the MAYAK-2, and with every step they are approaching those that will have to be put on the assembly line," Kogogin was quoted as saying by the KAMAZ press service on April 9.

In 2025, KAMAZ plans to produce samples of the MAYAK-2.5 unmanned trucks, and in another year and a half to two years, the MAYAK-3, which will be as close as possible to the serial solution. The MAYAK-2 car, which was launched at the Central Ring Road, is an augmented, redesigned version of the MAYAK—1, including in terms of selecting a component base, Kogogin explained.

As the head of the enterprise noted, the MAYAK-2 was already created on the basis of a sanctions-resistant version of the KamAZ-54901 car. The component base, which is responsible for ensuring autonomous movement, in the MAYAK-2 car is also import-substituted.

In 2023, KAMAZ unmanned mainline tractors were launched on the M-11 Neva highway, and 20 Naberezhnye Chelny trucks are currently operating on it. In August last year, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed a decree authorizing the launch of unmanned cargo transportation on the Central Ring Road in the Moscow Region and on the M-12 Vostok highway.

The day before, it was reported that in the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Automobile Plant (formerly GAZ), NEOS unmanned cargo platforms began to be used in a test mode, in particular, for transporting cabins between the workshops of the enterprise. It is expected that in the future they will be used in airports, cargo warehouses and ports.
