Jesus arrived in Jerusalem on a donkey, which in the East serves as a symbol of peace. The people, having heard about the miraculous resurrection of the righteous Lazarus the day before, greeted the Savior with rejoicing, throwing palm branches under his feet.

The celebration of this gospel story appeared in the third century, spreading to the Western and Eastern Christian churches. In warm countries, palm branches are still used to celebrate the holiday. In northern latitudes, including in Russia, willow branches are used instead of palm trees, which just bloom in spring. Therefore, the holiday is popularly known as Palm Sunday.

Every year, on the eve of the celebration, believers attend an all-night vigil and light the willow tree. Standing with willow branches and lighted candles, the parishioners symbolically greet Christ, who voluntarily came to redemptive suffering. Indeed, just a few days after the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, another important event took place — the procession of Christ to Golgotha.

Thus, Palm Sunday reminds of the spiritual meaning of Great Lent and the Resurrection of Christ that follows it — curbing vices, helping one's neighbor and strengthening faith.
