American automotive journalists appreciated the Lada Niva SUV, which entered the Russian market in April in a new Sport version. "The starting price of the Niva Sport would be a whopping $19.6 thousand if it could be bought in the USA, which, of course, is impossible. But we would like that," wrote Christopher Smith, the site's editor.
In a note about the Russian novelty, he listed the characteristics of the new Niva powertrain and noted that the 1.6 engine has a significant difference in power compared to the 1.7 (122 hp versus 83 hp), but noted that the acceleration time to "hundreds" is not impressive. At the same time, he praised the interior updates of the Niva Sport compared to the Niva Legend, including sports heated seats and steering wheel.
"Lada cars have never been sold in North America, but these cars are available in European regions. Naturally, they are very common in Russia, but, ironically, they will not be subject to any Trump tariffs if someone in the States really wants to purchase them. In this regard, the question arises: would you pay $ 19,600 for a simple off—road Lada with a sporty appearance?" wrote Smith.
