Scientists have found a weed capable of destroying house foundations in Russia

A European hybrid plant, Reynutria Bohemica, has been discovered on the territory of the Russian Federation, which is capable of destroying the foundations of buildings with a powerful root system. This was announced on April 10 by Yulia Vinogradova, Chief Researcher at the N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).
"It's a spontaneous hybrid. Initially, there were two species in the natural range: Sakhalin reynutria and Japanese reynutria. They were grown in botanical gardens in Great Britain and Holland. There are those kinds of <...> a hybrid of rheinutria Bohemian was formed,— Vinogradova told RIA Novosti.
She explained that this plant first spread to Europe, and now it has appeared in the southern regions of Russia. In particular, these weeds were found in Kislovodsk.
Vinogradova added that this species is capable of destroying the foundations of houses due to its powerful root system, and it is impossible to dig it out on its own. According to her, scientists have already started developing methods to control this weed.
Last summer, a quarantine was declared in the Krasnodar Territory due to the threat of the spread of the midge weed. Rosselkhoznadzor specialists were engaged in the localization and destruction of the bindweed plant.
