The Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc that won the German elections and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have signed a coalition agreement on the formation of a new cabinet of ministers of Germany. This was reported by the Bild newspaper on April 9.

"In any case, I expect that we will get the agreement of our parties [on the coalition agreement] so that we can start working with the new federal government in early May, so that the situation in our country improves soon," CDU leader Friedrich Merz said at the presentation of the preliminary coalition agreement by the German parties, which was broadcast on YouTube -the Phoenix channel.

According to Bild, the CDU will receive seven ministries, the SPD — five, and the CSU — three.

It is also reported that the SPD's demand for an increase in taxes for high-income people was rejected, but the parties agreed to fix the standard pension amount at 48% relative to the national average salary until 2031.

Earlier, on March 11, RTL TV channel, citing a survey by the forsa Institute for Market Research and Public Opinion, reported that the majority of Germans are not sure that Merz will cope with the duties of chancellor. According to the survey results, 52% of respondents believe that Merz will make many mistakes and will not be able to become an effective head of government.

Early elections to the Bundestag were held on February 23. They were won by the CDU/CSU bloc, which received 28.6% of the vote. The Social Democratic Party (SPD), led by Olaf Scholz, showed the worst result in its history, gaining 16.4%. The second place was taken by the "Alternative for Germany" (20.8%), and the fourth place was taken by the "Greens" (11.6%). The Left bloc became the fifth in terms of the number of votes with 8.8%.
