The United States may require the European Union (EU) countries to resume purchases of Russian gas. Euractiv writes about this on April 9, referring to a statement by an expert from the Berlin Center for Materials and Energy. Helmholtz Susanna Nis.

Nis believes that the situation can develop according to two scenarios. In the first case, Russia and the United States will conclude a gas exchange deal, after which gas from Russia will be shipped to Europe as American gas. According to the second option, Russian gas will be delivered via Nord Streams.

"The Americans may demand that we buy Russian gas again... [The new German government] may well say, "we didn't want to, but we had to, for the sake of peace," the specialist clarified.

At the same time, analyst at The Hague Center for Strategic Studies (HCSS), Giles van den Beuke, pointed out that the resumption of gas supplies from Russia would help reduce gas prices in Europe. Therefore, the resumption of Russian Gazprom's supplies will be a matter of "economic considerations" rather than an issue of energy security, he added.

On April 7, State Duma deputy Igor Ananskikh said that EU countries could begin to conclude contracts with Russian companies for the supply of energy resources privately. According to the parliamentarian, the return to cooperation with Russia in this direction will be beneficial for the citizens of European states.

On April 5, Mario Vogt, Prime Minister of the German federal state of Thuringia, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, allowed the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Germany. Also, according to the politician, the resumption of supplies is possible only after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier, on April 4, Lubos Blaga, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Slovakia, told Izvestia about his intention to return Russian gas transit to the European Union through his territory. He added that the situation is so absurd that even Western countries that "hate" Russia buy liquefied natural gas (LNG) from it and then sell it in Europe.
