Attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on energy infrastructure pose a great danger to the European Union (EU). The consequences of such attacks are felt even in the case of unsuccessful attacks. Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, shared this opinion in an interview with Izvestia on April 9.

"Such actions either directly disrupt supplies or provoke an increase in energy prices, such as gas and electricity," he said.

According to him, the attacks by the Ukrainian forces undermine the stability of the EU economy and can be seen as an unfriendly step not only towards Russia, but also towards other countries, including Turkey, which earns money from energy transit.

"Europe is already suffering huge losses due to high energy costs. Such strikes only aggravate the situation and look especially strange, given that the EU remains one of Ukraine's main sponsors," the economist said.

In his opinion, attacks on energy facilities not only harm the countries of the region, but also jeopardize possible peace initiatives.

"The rejection of strikes on the energy sector is one of the key conditions for potential agreements with Russia. Such actions are absolutely illogical and counterproductive," Chirkov concluded.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had attacked Russian energy facilities four times over the past day. The ministry clarified that as a result of shelling by Ukrainian militants, high-voltage lines were disconnected in the Kursk region. Also, drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked power facilities in the Zaporozhye and Rostov regions.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 28 that Russia reserves the right not to observe a moratorium on strikes on energy infrastructure if the Ukrainian side continues to violate these agreements.
