National Hockey League (NHL) Club The Washington Capitals have nominated Alexander Ovechkin for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This was announced on April 9 by journalist Sammy Silber.

"The captain of the Capitals was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player who best demonstrates qualities such as perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey," she wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an award given annually to an NHL hockey player who has shown great sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The winner is determined by the members of the Association of hockey Journalists based on the results of the regular season.

Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the NHL regular season on April 6 in a match against the New York Islanders, breaking the record of Canadian Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals.

The Russian hockey player was congratulated on the record by the TV channels of the National Media Group and the leader of the group "Hands Up!" Sergey Zhukov. The performer dedicated a clip to the hockey player's favorite song from the repertoire of the musical group to the historical achievement with a modified text dedicated to the record goal.
