Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte have agreed to expand cooperation in the field of defense industry amid "geopolitical challenges." This was reported on April 9 by Kyodo News.

"The proposed areas of cooperation include the development of advanced dual—use technologies with civilian and military applications, which are likely to cover artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles and quantum technologies," the publication clarifies.

The publication stressed that Japan welcomes the increasing presence of NATO in the affairs of the Indo-Pacific region. The Japanese Prime Minister also expressed interest in joining the alliance command, which coordinates the supply of military equipment and training of fighters for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

On April 7, Ishiba said that Tokyo and Washington plan to work together on regional issues, including resolving the Taiwan issue.

Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump announced the US approval of military supplies to Japan for $ 1 billion. According to Trump, Japan is one of the largest buyers of American military products. In his opinion, cooperation between Tokyo and Washington contributes to stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
