An auto expert spoke about the risks of using summer tires in snowfall

A sudden change in the weather poses a serious danger to motorists who have already switched to summer tires. Summer tires lose their elasticity at low temperatures, which significantly impairs their grip on the road, especially on snow and ice. Andrey Kochnev, head of the Alfa-Leasing Group's motor transport department, told Izvestia about this on April 10.

The specialist noted that an insufficient number of slats on summer tires reduces braking performance and increases the risk of skidding. He recommends, if possible, to abandon trips in such conditions or consider the option of a temporary return to winter tires.

"If car operation is unavoidable, it is worth choosing a route with the least number of difficult sections: steep descents, ascents or narrow roads," the expert advised.

Kochnev emphasizes the importance of taking special precautions when forced to ride on summer tires in a snowfall. The speed of movement should be minimal, especially at turns and intersections. It is necessary to significantly increase the distance to the cars in front and avoid sudden braking. The specialist explained that you need to brake smoothly and in advance to prevent loss of control over the car.

He also clarified that at rates below zero, the traction properties of summer tires deteriorate critically. The most dangerous period is in the morning, when the road surface is particularly slippery. Kochnev warned that snow, ice and reduced visibility during a snowfall pose additional risks.

"Summer tires are not designed to operate at low temperatures and in contact with cold surfaces, which increases the risks of endangering the life and health of the driver and passengers," concluded Kochnev.

Experts noted that the greatest activity of buyers occurs during the daytime, regardless of the day of the week. 42% of all sales contacts take place from 12:00 to 17:00. The evening hours, from 18:00 to 23:00, account for 29.6% of contacts. Interaction with sellers in the period from 6:00 to 11:00 is slightly less popular (23%). At night, customer activity is minimal: the interval from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. accounts for only 5% of contacts.
