Oncologist named cancer risk-reducing products

Some foods contain substances that can inhibit the growth of tumor cells, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the immune system. Despite the fact that no product guarantees complete protection against cancer, proper nutrition is an important element of prevention and support of the body during treatment. On April 10, the oncologist, oncosurgeon of JSC "Medicine" (academician Roitberg clinic), PhD Ruslan Basanov told Izvestia about this.
According to him, scientific studies confirm that some products contain substances capable of suppressing the growth of tumor cells and strengthening the immune system. The expert identified a group of products with antitumor properties. He explained that cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli and cauliflower contain sulforaphane, which is able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Berries are rich in antioxidants and ellagic acid, which protects DNA from damage. Garlic and onion, due to the content of allicin and quercetin, have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect.
Basanov also noted the benefits of green tea, which contains catechins that inhibit the formation of new vessels that feed the tumor. Fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel can help reduce chronic inflammation, which is a factor in the development of cancer. Shiitake and reishi mushrooms stimulate the immune system, while turmeric slows down the development of cancer cells due to curcumin.
At the same time, the oncologist warned about products that increase the risk of cancer. Processed meat, excess red meat, sugar and refined carbohydrates, alcohol and trans fats can contribute to the development of the disease.
"Although proper nutrition reduces risks, it is not a substitute for treatment. Some cancers, such as leukemia, are poorly associated with diet, and in the later stages the tumor may not respond to nutritional factors. However, a balanced diet helps the body to fight, enhances the effect of therapy and improves the quality of life," the doctor said.
The specialist stressed that no diet provides absolute protection against cancer, but it can become a powerful ally in the prevention and control of the disease. Increasing the diet of vegetables, berries, herbs and healthy fats while reducing the consumption of sugar and processed foods not only reduces cancer risks, but also improves overall health.
Earlier, on April 3, Anna Marchenko, MD, obstetrician-gynecologist, chief physician of the Dr. ANNA family clinic, told Izvestia how to reduce cancer risks. As the doctor noted, breast cancer is one of the ten most common cancers, and cervical cancer ranks fourth among female cancers. At the same time, according to the expert, these diseases continue to "get younger" — they are increasingly being diagnosed in women of an earlier age.
