Some European Union (EU) countries are planning to reduce purchases of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) in order to reduce the cost of supplies. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on April 9, citing diplomats.

"On Tuesday, EU countries put forward plans to ease mandatory storage replenishment targets before winter in order to reduce supply charges," the report said.

According to the publication, seven countries — France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and the Netherlands — are promoting measures to limit purchases of liquefied natural gas. In addition, they call for reducing the target storage capacity to 80% under certain conditions. Thus, the EU countries will be able to reduce the volume of LNG purchases from the United States.

"In these turbulent times and in the context of the ongoing struggle for competitiveness, of course, it would be a better solution (to provide more flexibility) than just following current goals," Politico quoted Lithuanian Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas as saying.

Earlier, on February 14, US President Donald Trump signed two new documents, including a decree establishing the US Energy Dominance Council. The second document signed was a decree on the abolition of mandatory COVID vaccination in American schools.
