Economic history shows that deals are often made under pressure, and the question is how much such agreements will benefit China or the United States. At the same time, it is safe to say that some kind of cooperation will be achieved between these countries, since they conduct the largest international trade, Georgy Ostapkovich, director of the HSE Center for Economic Studies, told Izvestia on April 9.

According to him, the parties are unlikely to reach a comprehensive agreement, but they may reach a compromise on strategic goods.

On the eve of April 8, American leader Donald Trump said he was confident in China's desire to conclude a trade deal with the United States.

"China practically cannot do without American technological equipment related to the IT sector — chips, IT structures. On the other hand, half of America wears Chinese clothes and shoes. The Americans themselves do not have the capacity to sew such a large number of goods. Therefore, they will find agreements in this direction," he explained.

The expert recalled that even during the trade wars under Trump, the parties eventually made concessions.

"They will not make drastic concessions to each other, but in those areas where interdependence is high, they will find a compromise. They have already had such cases," Ostapkovich summed up.

On the same day, the American leader announced that the duties imposed by the United States bring about $2 billion in profit to the state treasury. In addition, Trump added that more than 70 countries have expressed their willingness to negotiate with Washington on these tariffs.

At the same time, it was reported that the US authorities increased import duties on goods from China to 104%. It was noted that the tariffs were imposed because China has not lifted its retaliatory measures in the field of trade.
