AvtoVAZ has restored pilot production

AvtoVAZ has announced the complete restoration of technology in the former workshops of pilot industrial production (OPP) in Tolyatti. It was created to develop methods for the release of new models and the production of small-scale cars, the company's press service said in a statement received by Izvestia on April 9.
Restarting the OPP's facilities will reduce logistical costs, expand the product range and improve the quality of small-scale products, the company said. Currently, AvtoVAZ's subsidiary, VIS-Avto Production of Special Vehicles, is producing pickups and vans based on Lada Granta and Niva, Niva Bronto SUVs and various special vehicles.
VIS-Avto is currently mastering the welding and painting of bodies for Niva Sport, previously produced at the parent company. In the future, it is planned to assemble cars here as part of new AvtoVAZ projects.
In 2024, OPP restarted body welding and car assembly technologies, and in early 2025, a modern paint complex was launched (previously, cars were sent to the main production site for painting).
Previously, AvtoVAZ's OPP started production of the VAZ-2123 SUV (which later became the Chevrolet Niva), and the Kalina and other models were being assembled. Ten years ago, by the decision of the previous shareholders, the OPP was closed, some of the equipment was dismantled, and some was mothballed.
On April 5, AvtoVAZ began selling the classic three-door Lada Niva SUV in a new Sport modification, on the 48th anniversary of the start of production of the first serial Niva. The price of the new product starts from 1.7 million rubles.
On April 4, it was reported that, as stated by the head of AvtoVAZ Maxim Sokolov, the key projects for the development of the company's production in 2025 are the start of production of Lada Iskra, the development of a new 1.8-liter engine for the Niva family and the launch of the second-generation Vesta Sport.
