Baku is ready to begin steps to build trust with Yerevan. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on April 9 at the international forum "Towards a New World Order."

He noted that the immediate restoration of friendly relations with Armenia seems unrealistic. According to Aliyev, it is premature to talk about any economic integration of the republics at this stage.

"But we are ready to start taking small steps towards building trust," the president said, his speech was broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Azerbaijani Baku TV channel.

On April 2, Aliyev said that the signing of a peace treaty with Yerevan is possible only if two conditions are met. First, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group on the settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh should be abolished. Secondly, the Armenian constitution contains a provision on the unification of the historical territory between the countries, which is considered an "open territorial claim" to Azerbaijan.

On March 13, Azerbaijan and Armenia completed negotiations on agreeing on the text of a peace treaty. According to Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Yerevan has accepted proposals regarding the last two uncoordinated points. At the next stage, the Azerbaijani side expects Yerevan to amend its constitution, which still contains territorial claims against Baku.
