- The political scientist assessed the likelihood of a rollback of Trump's decision on duties

US President Donald Trump will not roll back the decision on import duties, as this would be perceived as a weakness of the American leader. This was stated by political scientist Nikolai Topornin on Tuesday, April 8.
"After all, he talked about such a measure immediately after taking office, so now he won't give up for sure — Trump is not such a politician. A rollback may hit his image, ratings will decline, and the American president will not allow this," the expert said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
At the same time, the political scientist admitted that Washington may meet individual states halfway in relation to certain product groups. This can happen if mutually beneficial agreements are reached, Topornin suggested.
"But they won't fundamentally revise tariffs, so the world needs to prepare for a difficult period. Now it is important for competitive countries to choose the right strategy to offset losses from draconian duties," he concluded.
On April 7, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose additional duties on goods from China in the amount of 50% from April 9, if China does not abandon retaliatory measures against US tariffs, RT reports. Thus, the American leader reacted to the duties imposed by China in the amount of 34%.
On the same day, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that almost 70 countries had contacted the administration of American leader Donald Trump with a request to negotiate the tariffs, according to the website. kp.ru .
On April 2, the American leader announced large-scale trade measures: base tariffs of 10% are introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For the EU, this figure has been raised to 20%, and for China — to 34%. On April 4, China imposed duties of 34% against the United States.
