- The orientalist assessed the prospects for contacts between the United States and Iran

As a result of the contacts between the United States and Iran, progress is possible regarding the discussion of the deal between the countries. Stanislav Tarasov, an expert on the problems of the Middle East and the Caucasus, told Izvestia on April 8.
[US President Donald] Trump usually uses his own resources, old tricks, pressure and behind-the-scenes negotiations. All the Western media reported about the pressure and threat, saying: "they will strike today, tomorrow, the day after tomorrow." The parties were engaged in a verbal duel, accusing each other, but in fact there were closed negotiations through channels that were established during the administration of [previous US President Joe] Biden, who decided to restore relations with Iran and proceed to conclude a new agreement on the nuclear deal," the expert noted.
In his opinion, the American leader has exhausted the resources of pressure. At the same time, he recalled that although Trump had stated that there would be direct talks on April 12, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi denied information about the level of contacts, specifying that there would be indirect talks in Oman.
"That is, the parties will be sitting in different rooms, exchanging notes. If only at the first stage they reach some kind of agreement, and, most likely, it is a question of the United States waiving any sanctions, then the parties can enter into a direct high-level dialogue. What is a high level? That's what they say about the meeting of the foreign ministers," Tarasov explained.
At the same time, he stressed that the meeting of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with Trump in Washington showed that there would be no strikes on Iran, and that discussions were underway.
"We'll have to wait for Saturday. Something tells me that there will be some progress in this direction," the expert added.
However, he noted that Iran is probably preparing additional options. Consultations with representatives of Iran, Russia, and China are taking place in Moscow.
"There is one caveat. The nuclear agreement was signed by a team of six countries, with the participation of other states, including Russia and China. Then the Americans withdrew from this agreement, but the agreement is valid, the other parties have not refused to withdraw from this agreement. And now the Americans are persuading Iran to sign an independent agreement among themselves. And what will the remaining ones do? There are many such questions that have not yet been answered. But the situation is developing, there will be no war," Tarasov concluded.
Yesterday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is in constant consultations with Iran on various issues, including the nuclear deal. According to him, the Russian side is ready to make every effort and do everything possible to help resolve this problem through political and diplomatic means.
