- The political scientist questioned the preservation of the status of Ukrainian refugees

The issue of the fate of Ukrainian refugees after the end of the conflict is not an easy one. Vladimir Zharikhin, a political scientist and deputy head of the Institute of CIS Countries, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, April 8.
The day before, Euractiv wrote that the legal status of Ukrainian refugees in the European Union (EU) may be under threat due to the lack of a specific plan allowing them to stay after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. 360.ru .
It is noted that in February 2022, the EU Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) began to operate, which allowed Ukrainians to live and work in European countries, RT reports. However, due to the ongoing ceasefire negotiations, this initiative may be cancelled.
"To be honest, I do not know what will happen to the refugees, what specific decisions will be made in Europe. By the way, these decisions may vary between countries — after all, they retain residual sovereignty, but I think Europe itself does not really know what they will do, especially since decisions can be made when the moment comes, not by the political forces that are currently in power, but by others.", — Zharikhin shared in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
According to the political scientist, they will not retain the status that the refugees had until recently, because there is no such active solidarity with Ukraine in Europe as before.
"Over time, it will decrease even more, because, among other things, the economic situation of European countries is clearly going to worsen, and along with the deterioration of the economic situation of countries, and, consequently, residents, attitudes towards migrants, including Ukrainian refugees, will change," the expert concluded.
Andreas Breitner, director of the Association of Housing Companies in Northern Germany (VNW), said on March 5 that Germany expects a new mass flow of Ukrainian refugees in connection with the decision of the administration of US President Donald Trump to stop military aid to Kiev. According to him, most of the refugees will come to the north of Germany, since the Ukrainian diaspora has already formed there in three years.
