Moldova plans to start negotiations with the European Commission (EC) on joining the European Union (EU) by the end of this year. This was announced on April 7 by the country's Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi in an interview with the IPN news agency.

According to him, European integration is the only strategic direction for Moldova. Popshoy expressed confidence that over time, many citizens of the country will support this path.

"We have done everything necessary to implement the recommendations of the European Commission, received a positive conclusion and started the screening process. At the moment, everything is on schedule, <...> nothing should prevent us from starting negotiations before the end of the year," the Moldovan Foreign minister said.

In February, the head of the EU delegation to Chisinau, Janis Mažeix, said that Moldova's European integration into the European Union could be suspended if the parliamentary elections were not free and fair. He stressed the need to accelerate amendments to legislation to combat electoral corruption, foreign interference, disinformation on social media and cyber attacks.
