The number of executions in the world has reached a ten-year high after a sharp increase in their number in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. This was reported on April 8 by The Guardian newspaper, citing data from the annual report of the international human rights organization Amnesty International.

"In 2024, more people were executed than in any other year in the last decade, which is mainly due to the sharp increase in the number of executions in Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia," the article says.

According to the organization, 1,518 people were executed worldwide last year, which is 32% more than in 2023. However, the actual figure may be much higher.

"All known executions in Iraq were committed for terrorism—related crimes, while about half of the executions in Iran were committed for drug-related crimes," the newspaper writes.

It is specified that the number of executions doubled in Egypt — from eight to 13, in Singapore — from five to nine, in Yemen — from 15 to 38. According to the newspaper, death sentences were carried out in 15 countries in 2024.

According to media reports, in March, the US state of Arizona carried out the first death penalty by lethal injection since 2022. It was noted that 53-year-old Aaron Ganches was convicted of murdering his girlfriend's ex-husband in 2002.

Also, on February 28, a woman who abducted and sold 17 children was executed in China.
