The expert predicted a reduction in the number of fraudulent schemes

The number of fraud schemes may decrease in Russia. This may be influenced by the new law on countering telephone fraud, Konstantin Larin, head of the Cyber Intelligence department at Bastion, told Izvestia on April 8.
In his opinion, the initiative will have a positive impact on improving the level of mobile security of citizens and strengthen their trust in financial institutions. In addition, it is expected to improve control over the actions of intruders and respond more quickly to identified fraud schemes.
The expert added that the installation of legislative restrictions will help reduce the potential audience of victims. Thus, the ban on remote creation of SIM cards will make it more difficult for attackers to access banking applications, and limiting mass calls at the initial stage will reduce the number of potential victims.
The initiative also eliminates the possibility of receiving text messages during phone calls, which will reduce the number of schemes where fraudsters dictate the actions necessary for hacking over the speakerphone. As Larin explained, older people are most often victims in such situations. At the same time, banning the transfer of SIM cards to non-relatives will help reduce the number of speculations with fake powers of attorney, and restricting the use of foreign messengers by government agencies and banks will close communication channels popular with intruders, thereby reducing their anonymity.
"The adopted law is an important step in the fight against telephone and Internet fraud. It will help not only to reduce the number of fraudulent schemes, but also to make the actions of intruders more public. In addition, increased control and the introduction of new technologies will improve the monitoring and identification of suspicious activity, which will create additional barriers for fraudsters," Larin shared.
Earlier, on April 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law aimed at protecting citizens from telephone and Internet scams. Russians will be able to opt out of receiving mass calls and messages, and all incoming calls from legal entities will be displayed on labeled phone screens. Banks are now required to extend anti-fraud measures not only to online transfers, but also to ATM transactions.
