In the West, there are attempts to belittle the role of the USSR in the victory in World War II and justify the crimes of the Nazis. This was announced on April 8 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"Attempts to rewrite history and radically revise the political, international legal, and moral outcomes of victory in World War II are multiplying in the West. The role of our country in defeating Hitler is being deliberately belittled, and the bloody crimes of the Nazis are being justified," Lavrov said during his speech at the Foreign Ministry.
The head of the department stressed that preserving the truth about the Second World War is a common duty to those who gave their lives for peace and freedom. Lavrov added that European countries undermine the principle of outlawing Nazism.
On April 7, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that the Latvian authorities were working on plans for the mass destruction of war memorials in the country in order to overshadow the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Victory. The SVR noted that Riga's behavior demonstrates a lack of honor, dignity and a sense of gratitude.
Earlier, on March 30, Lavrov called for a tough fight against the rewriting of history by the Baltic States, Poland and a number of other EU countries. He noted that in these countries, the criminals convicted by the Nuremberg Tribunal are being equalized with those who liberated Europe from fascism.
Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, said on March 26 that EU countries are trying to rewrite the history of the twentieth century so that the younger generation believes that Russia was not the victor of Nazism in World War II. According to him, the EU states have adopted the propaganda techniques of the Third Reich to intimidate the European philistine with the alleged Russian "threat."
