Classical works popular among students are named

In 2024, students most often read Mikhail Bulgakov's novel "The Master and Margarita." This follows from the data of the Lan electronic library of educational literature, which was reviewed by Izvestia on April 8.

Leo Tolstoy's novel "War and Peace" took the second place in popularity. Homer's Iliad, translated by Nikolai Gnedich, took the third place in the list of the most widely read classical works. Ivan Goncharov's "The Cliff" is in fourth place, and Alexander Ostrovsky's play "The Thunderstorm" rounded out the top five.

Also included in the top 10 most widely read classical works are: "The Story of Pugachev" by Alexander Pushkin, "Proverbs and Sayings of the Russian People" by Vladimir Dahl, "Eugene Onegin" by Pushkin, "Oblomov" by Ivan Goncharov, "Garnet Bracelet" by Alexander Kuprin.

"One of the most important elements of the educational process in higher education is the books that students read. And this applies to both professional or scientific publications, as well as fundamental works," said Alexander Nikiforov, Director of the Lan EdTech company.

He added that the classics do not lose their relevance, they are interesting to young people — this confirms the steady demand for works by Bulgakov, Pushkin, Tolstoy.

Earlier, on April 7, it was reported that, according to the results of a survey by the book network Bukvoed, book lovers in Russia do not have enough detective books on store shelves. Thus, 21.8% of Russians expressed a desire to see a wider range of detective stories in bookstores. Another 9.2% chose classical works, while 7.9% chose romantic prose. At the same time, 58.2% of respondents read books by both domestic and foreign writers, while 11.3% prefer exclusively Russian authors.
