The doctor dispelled the myth of universal spring vitamin deficiency

The popular notion of a total vitamin deficiency in spring is not true. Elena Ustinova, a general practitioner and nutritionist at the SM Clinic, told Izvestia about this on April 8.
She explained that the problem of spring vitamin deficiency is not relevant for everyone. According to her, the stereotype of universal spring vitamin deficiency was formed at a time when there was a seasonal shortage of fresh food. However, the modern rhythm of life and the availability of a varied diet have changed the situation.
"Today, not all people experience vitamin deficiency in the spring — the main role here is played by how a person eats," Ustinova noted.
The doctor admitted that the vegetables and fruits of last year's harvest really lose some of their beneficial properties. But even in the off-season, you can get the necessary vitamins from available products. Vitamin A is found in animal fats, vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, sauerkraut, bell peppers, and frozen berries.
The nutritionist also explained that B vitamins are poorly absorbed by many due to genetic characteristics rather than seasonal factors.
As for vitamin D, its level in most people remains stable all year round, but additional supplementation is still recommended to maintain the cardiovascular system, the doctor said.
"In spring, the body often experiences a breakdown — this is natural, as the metabolic rate decreases, and the mood worsens. However, a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals will help restore energy and recover after the winter," Ustinova said.
Earlier, on April 7, Ilnur Zubairov, a rheumatologist, a doctor of preventive and integrative medicine, and an expert at Solgar, listed body signals indicating a lack of trace elements to Izvestia. According to him, the presence of white dots on the nail plates may indicate a lack of vitamins and trace elements such as zinc, calcium, iodine, vitamin A. In addition, he explained that the symptoms of vitamin C deficiency include dry and split hair, fatigue, swollen and painful joints.
