Hungary will not support the European Union's (EU) retaliatory measures to raise tariffs on trade with the United States. This was announced on April 7 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto in an interview with M1 TV channel.

He noted that the European Commission (EC) is developing measures in response to the United States' decision to raise tariffs.

"We do not support the actions of the European Union in response to the US announcement of a tariff increase," the Hungarian Foreign Minister stressed, his words were reported by TASS.

Earlier in the day, Szijjarto also said that Brussels' inept security and economic policies had severely undermined the EU's competitiveness. He added that the EC was unable to establish customs cooperation with the United States after the introduction of duties on Chinese electric vehicles.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing 25% import duties on finished cars from April 3, and on auto parts no later than May 3. The American leader justified this measure by the need to protect "national security." Later, Bloomberg reported that the European Union was preparing a package of emergency measures to support the sectors of the economy that could be most affected by the imposition of duties by Washington.
