The cynologist called the misconceptions of dog breeders about ticks

Often, various misconceptions of dog breeders about fleas and ticks endanger the health of their pets, said the president of the Russian Cynological Federation (RCF). Vladimir Golubev. The expert told Izvestia on April 8 about the incorrect beliefs of animal owners.
"Some owners do not use certain protective equipment due to the fact that the pet does not go out beyond the courtyard of an apartment building, others stop treating dogs at the end of the summer, and someone starts treatment too late because they think that the remedy will work immediately. For example, snow has suddenly fallen in Moscow almost in the middle of April, but this is absolutely no reason to stop processing," he said.
Among the misconceptions is the belief that tick medications work immediately. As explained in the RCF, there is no such drug that would instantly cause the death of a tick or protect a pet immediately after application. In order for the remedy to work, it needs to accumulate in the epidermis. It is important to treat your pet in advance, as this is the only way to protect it.
In addition, some dog breeders believe that if the tick has already landed on the dog, then removing it is useless and even painful. They are guided by the fact that the insect will fall off on its own as soon as it receives enough nutrition. But to do so is to greatly risk the dog's health, the dog handler emphasized. The longer the tick stays on the pet's body, the greater the dose of intoxication the dog can receive.
Due to the early spring, ticks can wake up prematurely, and the risk of catching an insect may be as early as February. Dog breeders need to treat their pets with anti-tick products every month from March to November. As specified in the RCF, the ticks become active when the thaw begins and the temperature rises to +5... +7 degrees. They will be active until the first frost.
However, fleas are active all the time. A dog can become infected with them at any time. It is worth treating a dog from parasites all year round.
Some dog breeders prefer anti-tick pills, believing that this will scare away insects. But in fact, this is not the case, the Russian Cynological Federation emphasized. Pills do not protect against the planting of a tick, they help to develop immunity to the disease they carry. If such a pet is bitten by an infected tick, the disease will be easier to treat than an unvaccinated dog.
Dog breeders were advised to treat their pet with protective equipment at the peak of tick activity, and also not to forget to inspect the dog after each walk.
Earlier, on February 21, veterinarian Alexander Alyasov told Izvestia that the most common diseases in pets that are difficult to notice without examination include kidney failure, heart disease, periodontal disease (deep damage to the parotid tissue) and arthritis. Overweight and obesity are also important problems that occur in some animals.
