Canada has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over US duties on cars and spare parts. This is evidenced by the publication of the organization on April 7.

"Canada has requested WTO consultations on a dispute with the United States regarding measures <...> to impose duties of 25% on cars and automotive parts," the website says.

According to the report, Ottawa argues that the measures are incompatible with Washington's responsibilities under various provisions of the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade.

On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced large-scale trade measures: base tariffs of 10% are being introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For Europe, this figure has been increased to 20%, and for China — to 34%. In his speech, the president called April 2 the day when Americans will become rich again.

The next day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Ottawa would impose duties of 25% on all imported cars from the United States that are not subject to the North American Trade Agreement (USMCA). He called the new import duties a direct violation of the trade agreements that Trump discussed and promoted in his first term.
