The economic situation in the European Union (EU) continues to deteriorate due to the abandonment of Russian energy resources. The EU's real losses significantly exceed official estimates. Maxim Chirkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, shared this opinion in an interview with Izvestia on April 7.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the EU countries lost €1.3 trillion by abandoning Russian energy resources. Vedomosti writes about this.

"Indeed, the economic situation in the European Union as a whole is extremely negative. The data provided by Russian publications is certainly underestimated. Over the past three years, sanctions have caused much more damage to the European economy than €1.3 trillion," he said.

The expert stressed that attempts to replace Russian energy resources proved futile, especially given the developing economic confrontation and tariff war.

"It is clear that such a policy will further worsen the situation of European countries, because the exchange of protective duties will only lead to further increases in energy prices and new losses for the EU economies," Chirkov summed up.

Earlier, on January 20, Igor Yushkov, a leading analyst at the National Energy Security Fund, an expert and lecturer at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, noted in a conversation with Izvestia that China has long been one of the largest buyers of Russian energy resources. He has occupied this place for many years, even before the tightening of anti-Russian sanctions in 2022, being in first place in terms of Russian oil purchases.
