Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals hockey club on setting a historic record for the number of goals scored in regular season matches of the National Hockey League (NHL). The corresponding message was posted on the Kremlin's website on April 7.

"Congratulations on your outstanding record. You have surpassed the legendary masters in the number of goals scored in NHL regular season matches," the head of state noted.
