The Association for the Northern Territories is considered undesirable in the Russian Federation

The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has declared the activities of the Japanese non-governmental organization (NGO) Association for Northern Territories undesirable in the Russian Federation. This was reported on the agency's website on April 7.

It is noted that the members of this organization actively raise the issue of belonging to the so—called "northern territories" - the Russian islands of Iturup, Kunashir and the Lesser Kuril Ridge, openly declaring non-recognition of Russian jurisdiction over them. In addition, this NGO sponsors a movement in Japan trying to achieve the transfer of these territories under the control of Tokyo.

"[The Association] prepares collections of educational materials on the problems of the northern territories, organizes practical seminars and classes aimed at popularizing the revanchist movement, and also distributes propaganda materials, including literature and souvenirs containing elements of cartographic expansion," the Russian prosecutor's office noted.

In addition, the NGO has an advisory board, which includes representatives of the Japanese organizations the Union of Residents of the Islands of Tishima and Habomai and the Union for the Return of the Northern Territories, which are considered undesirable in Russia.

The Prosecutor General's Office reported that the Association for Northern Territories, headquartered in Tokyo, positions itself as an independent and non-governmental organization, while being funded primarily from the Japanese budget.

Earlier, on March 7, the Prosecutor General's Office declared undesirable the activities of the Latvian NGO Association for the Development of Russian Civil Society and Support for Russian Emigrants (AREM) on the territory of the Russian Federation. The ministry explained that this organization called for protests during election campaigns, and also openly supported anti-Russian sanctions.
