The service was led by Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). Subsequently, residents of 90 cities of Russia and Belarus will be able to personally see the ark with the relics of Tikhon from the Donskoy Monastery. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, sent a telegram to the participants of the commemorative ceremonies, in which he noted Tikhon's selfless service to the Fatherland and the people.
"Patriarch Tikhon's primatial feat, his tireless labors, and rich spiritual and humanistic heritage still inspire the Russian Orthodox Church to participate ascetically in the life of Russia," the message reads.
Tikhon (Vasily Bellavin in the world) was born in the territory of the modern Pskov region in 1865. In the 1900s, he performed episcopal duties in North America, playing a prominent role in spreading the Orthodox faith in the United States.
After the 1917 revolution, Tikhon was elected the first Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia in more than 200 years. The patriarchal activity of the saint fell during the period of the Civil War and the Soviet persecution of the church, he himself was under house arrest more than once. The primate of the church died in 1925 and was buried in the Donskoy Monastery. In 1989, Tikhon was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a confessor.
