In order to steal Russians' money and gain access to their personal data, fraudsters have come up with a new scheme with non-existent debts for housing and communal services, which they offer to pay using a fake QR code. This was announced on April 6 by the Department for the Organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Law enforcement officers warned that the attackers were distributing fake receipts through mailboxes, which reported the alleged existence of arrears in housing and communal services payments. There is also a fake QR code on the paper to transfer money.

"If you believe what is written on the receipt and pay the alleged debt using the specified QR code, the money will be credited to the fraudsters' account," TASS writes.

In addition, the QR code in the receipt may lead the user to a phishing link. If he opens the specified address, it will help fraudsters to get hold of his personal data, adds the newspaper.Ru». The Interior Ministry urged Russians to verify the authenticity of the receipts, for this purpose it is necessary to compare the information in the payment document with previously received receipts.

On April 2, it was reported that one in five Russians (21%) was deceived in the digital space, and 13% of respondents became victims of scams in real life, offline. Half of the respondents (50%) fell for the tricks of intruders both on and off the Internet. Such research results were provided by the <url> service.
