The current Gagarin Cup winner Metallurg Magnitogorsk lost 3-2 to Avangard Omsk in the sixth playoff match and was eliminated from the tournament. The meeting of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) teams took place on April 5 in Omsk.

Striker Nail Yakupov scored a double for Omsk, and Mikhail Gulyaev scored another goal. Dmitry Silantyev and Danila Yurov scored for the Magnitogorsk club. Thus, the score in the series became 4:2, which allowed Guy Boucher's wards to advance to the next round.

Avangard became the third club to reach the quarterfinals of the Gagarin Cup. Earlier, this was done by Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, who beat Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the series with a score of 4:0, as well as Spartak Moscow. The capital's club gained the upper hand with a 4-1 result in the confrontation with Severstal from Cherepovets.

The winners' opponents will be determined later, when Ak Bars, Avtomobilist, CSKA, Dinamo Minsk, Dynamo Moscow, SKA, Salavat Yulaev, Sibir, Traktor and Admiral finish their series.

On March 22, Salavat Yulaev's Canadian player Joshua Livo set a record for the most goals in a single KHL regular season. The forward scored his 49th goal in 62 games in a match against Barys from Kazakhstan and broke the record of Russian hockey player Sergei Mozyakin — 48 goals in 60 matches.
