The head of the European People's Party (EPP) faction in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, announced the emergence of a new world order in connection with the change in US foreign policy. He said this in an interview with Berliner Morgenpost on April 5.

According to Weber, the actions of the administration of US President Donald Trump call into question the fundamental principles of international relations.

He also expressed doubt about the return of the "old America" and noted that Washington increasingly sees Europe as an adversary.

"And I'm also afraid that the old America won't come back. We live in a new world order. Trump views Europe as opponents — this is exactly what his customs policy demonstrates," Weber said.

The politician called the introduction of high US import duties a black day and a huge mistake by Trump. At the same time, he stressed that the European Union (EU) would not allow itself to be dependent on the United States, since it has comparable economic power.

Weber also called on the EU to actively conclude trade agreements with other countries, calling such agreements anti-trump. In particular, he suggested speeding up the signing of agreements with the MERCOSUR association and India.

"The EU can become a beacon of fair, rules-based trade. The euro may also strengthen as a global currency," Weber added.

On April 2, Trump announced large-scale measures: base tariffs of 10% are being introduced for all products supplied to the United States. For Europe, this figure has been increased to 20%, and for China — to 34%. In his speech, the president called April 2 the day when Americans will become rich again.

Yuri Ichkitidze, an analyst at Freedom Finance Global, said on April 3 that the introduction of new duties could lead to a slowdown in US economic growth in 2025, as well as provoke an increase in inflation. According to him, the negative effect for the United States is associated with the boomerang effect — retaliatory measures and rising prices. Inflation may increase by 1-1.5% this year.
